By Fiona Dillon

In a tragic incident today, a male pedestrian in his 50s lost his life after being struck by an articulated lorry on the N25 in Ballyedekin, Midleton, Co. Cork. The incident occurred at approximately 4.10am this morning, and Gardaí are currently at the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Sadly, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been transferred to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death. No other injuries have been reported in relation to this incident.

As a result of the collision, the N25 between Ballyedekin and Castlemartyr village, east of Midleton, has been closed to allow for a thorough technical examination of the scene by Gardaí. Local diversions have been put in place to redirect traffic.

Gardaí in Midleton are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward with any information they may have. They are particularly interested in speaking to road users who were in the vicinity of Loughaderra between 3.45am and 4.15am this morning and may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings.

In a statement, the Gardaí said, “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N25 in the area of Loughaderra this morning, 3rd August 2023, between 3.45am and 4.15am is asked to make this footage available to Gardaí. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 462 1550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”

Road safety remains a top priority for authorities, and incidents like these serve as a tragic reminder of the importance of being vigilant and cautious on the roads. The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
