Timnit Gebru Speaks Out on Google’s Toxic Culture, AI’s Perils, and Big Tech’s Prejudices

"Timnit Gebru highlights ethical concerns amidst the AI gold rush"

Timnit Gebru, an artificial intelligence (AI) specialist, has described the current state of AI development as a “gold rush” in which those making the most money are not the ones at the forefront of the technology. Speaking from Kigali, Rwanda, where she was preparing to host a workshop and chair a panel at the International Conference on Learning Representations, Gebru highlighted the fact that many AI systems are built on a foundation of biases, inequalities and power imbalances. The conference was the first of its kind to be held in an African country, emphasising the neglect of the global south by the tech industry.
