From Drab to Fab: My Budget Fence Makeover Still Looks Posh After Two Years!

DIY Enthusiast Shares Budget-Friendly Tips for Garden Transformation

A Lancashire-based DIY enthusiast recently shared her secret to transforming worn-out fence panels into modern cedar fences on the cheap. Kate, known online as @kateandherhome, took to Instagram to share a step-by-step guide for those wanting to upgrade their gardens. She revealed that her DIY fence panels were actually super easy to make and still look posh two years on. Kate regularly shares interior design and home transformation tips with her 80,300 followers. Fans loved the finished result, with some claiming she had their ‘dream’ garden.

In a new reel, Kate said: “It’s been 2 years since we turned our tired fence panels into modern cedar fences, so here’s a quick how-to guide. Screw treated timber battens to each side of the existing fence panel. For wider fences, add another to the middle of the panel to prevent warping. Cut cedar slats to the desired length and fix to timber battens using stainless steel panel pins (these won’t rust). Align battens to the previous panel. We spaced the cedar slats 10mm apart and covered the joins with a vertical piece of cedar. The cedar battens were 44 x 15mm in size and came in 3m lengths. Stain with wood protective treatment to prevent weathering – we used @osmo_uk UV protection oil in clear 420 satin. We treat our fences every year, and the cedar has stayed its original colour because of this.”

Kate’s DIY fence panels have been a hit among her followers, who love her savvy idea. The tutorial gained more than 1,900 likes and 68,700 views. Keen DIY enthusiasts can pick up similar cedar slats online from various retailers, including Wickes and B&Q. The same Osmo UV Protection Oil is also available to buy online and will set shoppers back as little as £11.80. In the comments, Instagrammers shared their reactions, with one writing: “Makes such a big difference.” “This is our dream one day… when the pennies allow as it isn’t cheap anymore,” commented another. A third added: “Hey look so impressive. And those up lighters at night really set them off!” Someone else put: “Your fences are incredible!! So clever Kate.”

Kate’s DIY fence panels are a great way to spruce up your garden without breaking the bank. The project is easy to follow and can be done by anyone, regardless of their DIY skills. The best part is that the cedar slats and timber battens can be easily sourced from any home improvement store. By using stainless steel panel pins, you can ensure that your fence panels will last for years without rusting. Staining the wood with a protective treatment like Osmo UV Protection Oil will prevent weathering and keep the cedar looking as good as new.

Overall, Kate’s DIY fence panels are an excellent example of how you can transform your garden on a budget. With a little creativity and some elbow grease, you can create a beautiful outdoor space that you can be proud of. So, if you’re looking for a weekend project, why not give Kate’s DIY fence panels a try? Your garden will thank you for it!
