Tech Temptation: Ask Adrian about holding out for the new iPhone 15 with an expiring contract

"To Wait or Not to Wait: The Dilemma of Upgrading to iPhone 14 or Waiting for iPhone 15" - Expert Advice for Tech-Savvy Consumers from Dympna O'Sullivan

As the release of the iPhone 15 looms, many are left wondering whether they should upgrade to the iPhone 14 or wait for the latest model. While the iPhone 15 is expected to be announced in September and widely available in October, the question remains: will it be worth the wait?

According to Irish Independent tech journalist Adrian Weckler, if you’re someone who values having the latest and greatest or takes pride in having the newest thing, then waiting for the iPhone 15 may be worth it. However, if you’re concerned about missing out on must-have new features, Weckler believes the answer is no.

From what we know about the iPhone 15 so far, it is expected to only have incremental upgrades that won’t significantly change the user experience. Weckler notes that having used both the iPhone 13 and 14 extensively, the newer model isn’t that much different from the previous one. The main difference is that the iPhone 14 now comes in a “Plus”-size model with extra battery life and a larger screen.

If you’re considering upgrading to the iPhone 14, Weckler suggests going for the “Plus” model. However, he also advises considering how central your phone is to your life and what you’ll be using it for between now and September. If you’re going on a major trip this summer, for example, a phone with a better camera and battery life may be worth the upgrade.

But if your daily use mainly consists of scrolling social media, keeping up with the news, and using apps like email and WhatsApp, the iPhone 14 may not make that much of a difference to your life. In this case, it may be worth waiting for the iPhone 15, assuming you’re confident you’ll be offered the updated model on similar terms from your operator when the time comes.

Weckler notes that as someone who reviews hundreds of smartphones, he’s seen the innovation curve flattening out in some respects. The updates between models aren’t as significant as they used to be, with the exception of folding and flip phones, which offer a genuinely new type of experience.

So, should you upgrade to the iPhone 14 or wait for the iPhone 15? Ultimately, it depends on your personal preferences and how much you value having the latest technology. If you’re eager to upgrade and the iPhone 14 offers the features you need, go for it. But if you’re content with your current phone and the iPhone 15 is expected to offer only incremental upgrades, it may be worth waiting.
