How Cold Weather Can Impact Your Gadgets

Winter weather can cause a lot of problems for us, but did you know it can also affect your gadgets? Ireland is currently experiencing its longest cold spell in more than four-and-a-half years, and with the temperatures dropping, we’ve noticed that our phones and other gadgets are losing battery life faster than usual. Let’s take a look at why this happens and how you can combat it.

Why Does This Happen?
The main reason behind why our gadgets lose battery life faster in colder weather has to do with the internal components of our devices. Most electronic devices use lithium-ion batteries, which have an optimal performance temperature range between 0°C and 35°C (32°F to 95°F). If the temperature goes outside of this range, then the battery will start to degrade more quickly. This means that when temperatures drop below 0°C (32°F), the rate of degradation increases significantly, leading to shorter battery life times.

Another way to fight against shortening your battery life is by making sure that you have enough charge on your device before going out into cold temperatures. Ideally, you should top off your phone’s battery before heading outdoors so that you don’t risk draining it completely while out in the cold weather.
