On Wednesday, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney announced that the impact of Amazon’s decision to cut 18,000 jobs worldwide will be “relatively modest” for its Irish workforce. In recent weeks, Amazon has made the decision to cut jobs due to the effects of the pandemic on its business. Let us take a look at what this could mean for Amazon’s Irish employees.
Coveney indicated that there will be some cuts at Amazon’s Irish workforce but refused to give any more details until Amazon makes their own announcement. He said, “I’ll of course allow the company to announce those numbers for Ireland and to inform their workforce here.”

In addition to these employment opportunities, Amazon has invested over $1 billion into infrastructure projects such as data centres and software development centres since 2016 according to The Sunday Times report from earlier this year. These investments have greatly benefited other companies throughout Ireland who have worked with Amazon on these projects such as construction companies like Walls Construction and Sisk Group who built the new headquarters located near Dublin airport as well as EY who helped them set up their European operations center in Cork back in 2011.
